TMZ: Chiefs Fans to Owner: Fire Larry Johnson!!

Larry Johnson is only 80 yards away from becoming the all time leading rusher for the Kansas City Chiefs -- but after his anti-gay slur scandal last week, Chiefs fans want him off the team before he has a chance to make history.

Hundreds of loyal Chiefs fans have signed a petition, begging the team owner to keep Larry Johnson's name out of the Chiefs Hall of Fame forever.

The petition reads:

Tucker: Chiefs may use Kolby Smith at RB against Jaguars after Larry Johnson's suspension

Kolby Smith's timing may turn out to have been perfect.

The Kansas City Chiefs will be without suspended running back Larry Johnson when they travel to Jacksonville this week, and Smith, a year after knee surgery, is eligible and eager to come off the physically unable to perform list.

"This is what I'm here for: to play," Smith said. "I'm over my injury and I feel confident in my knee."

Johnson, a former Pro Bowler who is struggling this season, is serving a suspension for using gay slurs and belittling head coach Todd Haley. Presumably, that will shift the running duties to Jamaal Charles and Dantrell Savage.

Another possibility may be Smith, who says he's fully healed from his knee surgery. Activating him will be a decision the Chiefs must make no later than Friday.

Haley, who held Kansas City's first practice Monday after a three-day weekend following their bye, said he's encouraged by the way Smith has been looking in practice.

Johnson settlement good for both sides

The settlement between the Kansas City Chiefs and running back Larry Johnson regarding his suspension means both sides are interested in continuing their working relationship.

There was speculation the settlement talks could mean the Chiefs and Johnson might be parting ways. However, the end game of the settlement is that Johnson will be docked one pay check rather than two. The Chiefs were hoping to dock Johnson two games. The Chiefs are on a bye this week and play Jacksonville on Nov. 8. Johnson is off his suspension Nov. 9.

Chiefs, Johnson reach settlement over suspension

NFL Network’s Jason La Canfora reports the Kansas City Chiefs and RB Larry Johnson reached a settlement on Saturday over his two-game suspension. The two sides agreed that Johnson will still stay away from the team until Nov. 9, but will be docked just one game check instead of two.

The Chiefs suspended Johnson on Wednesday for two weeks for comments on the social networking site Twitter and in the locker room. The remarks, which included a gay slur and also questioned his coach’s ability, were cited as conduct detrimental to the team. Since then, there has been dialogue between the league and the NFLPA about the issue, league sources tell La Canfora, with the sides reaching an agreement whereby Johnson will remain away from the team for the stated period but will be docked one game check, which is roughly $280,000.

PFT: Kurt Warner: Todd Haley is "frustrated"

As the Arizona Cardinals' offensive coordinator last season, Todd Haley got to the Super Bowl. As the Kansas City Chiefs' head coach this season, things haven't gone quite so well.

Haley is struggling through a 1-6 start to the season and dealing with the enormous distraction that is running back Larry Johnson.

And so it's no surprise that Haley's quarterback in Arizona, Kurt Warner, says that he knows Haley is frustrated.

PFT: League, union handling Johnson talks

We wrote earlier Friday about the settlement talks currently underway regarding Larry Johnson's future with the Chiefs.

The assumption was that the talks were happening between the Chiefs and Johnson's agent, but PFT's Mike Florio has learned that the discussion has reached higher levels of the sport.

The NFL and the NFLPA have been discussing how to handle the issue because this is a potential precedent-setting case.  A player hasn't been suspended for comments on Twitter before, and we're reporting that both sides fear the possibility of a bad outcome.

For example, the league could lose the hearing outright.  There are potential first amendment questions that could be raised.  Essentially, how far can a team go in restricting what a player says in the current collective bargaining agreement?

Williamson: What to expect from AFC West QBs

Kansas City, Matt Cassel: In his first season in Kansas City, Cassel has been far from a franchise player the Chiefs hope he will become. Cassel has the potential, but the former Patriot has been slow to get rolling.

Cassel doesn’t have nearly the supporting talent around him in Kansas City that he had last season with the Patriots. Williamson believes Cassel has a chance to improve for the 1-6 Chiefs, but he needs help.

“He’s really tough to judge,” Williamson said. “The guy only has 21 pro starts. … But I see him as a system guy, a solid, middle-of-the-road guy who will be serviceable. He’ll never be great, but you can win with him.”

But Williamson doesn’t see Cassel having much of a chance to turn around the Chiefs this season.

“That offense needs six or seven new starters,” Williamson said. “They have possibly the worst offensive line in the NFL, which in turn gives them no running game. It’s going to take a while in Kansas City. But that’s not Cassel’s fault. I’m not saying he’ll be a star, but the quarterback is not the problem in Kansas City.”

PFT: Larry Johnson filing appeal, talking settlement

It's a good thing Larry Johnson's suspension came during Kansas City's bye week, because it's taking up a lot of the team's time .

Johnson is planning to file his appeal regarding the suspension Friday, according to ESPN.  Meanwhile, the Chiefs and Johnson are hoping to solve their differences without a hearing.

Johnson's agent Peter Schaffer told the Kansas City Star that the two sides are working on a settlement that would help decide Johnson's future.  Asked whether that settlement would mean a "separation from the team," Schaffter said "not necessarily."

A potential hearing would occur on Tuesday.
