Tucker: Chiefs owner Clark Hunt becoming more comfortable
|
|
Shortly after his father died three years ago, Clark Hunt realized he wasn't fully prepared to be an NFL owner. He
thought he would be. He and the late Lamar Hunt, the founder of the
Kansas City Chiefs and an iconic figure in professional sports, had
planned carefully for the day. But in an interview Wednesday with
The Associated Press, Hunt said he quickly realized he was not quite
ready for the demands of the media and the obligations to the public.
Quiet and decidedly non-flamboyant by nature, he had always preferred
working in the background. But suddenly, he was thrust onto
center stage. Cameras and microphones were thrust into his face. Fans
were clamoring to know how he intended to get the team to the Super
Bowl. "The first year after my father passed away was a challenge
for me because I was just not used to it," said Hunt, at 44 the
youngest owner in the NFL. "There's both the media side as well as
public speaking engagements. There's a fair amount of both. That's just
part and parcel of the job responsibility." continue reading...

Wilson: Chiefs' Derrick Johnson sounds off
|
|
Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Derrick Johnson is fed up, and he's not going to take it anymore.
Well, at least he's not going to keep his frustration to himself.
Johnson vented to Kansas City reporters today, getting it off his
chest how mad he is that he's not starting and was the subject of trade
rumors prior to the NFL deadline Tuesday.
"It sucks," Johnson said. "It kind of sucks to not be starting and
not be playing like I should. I should be out there playing. I should
be out there starting. I should be out there helping this team win." continue reading...

PFT: Chiefs dust off Kenny Smith
|
As the Kansas City Chiefs continue to try to remake their roster, they've slipped into a DeLorean and set the dial to 2003.
The
Chiefs have signed defensive lineman Kenny Smith. Yes, that Kenny
Smith. The one who hasn't played in an NFL game since 2003, when he
started nine games for the Saints.
Though the release from the
team says that he played with the Saints through 2004, the NFL.com
player page for Smith shows zero appearances in 2004 or 2005. For
2006, 2007, and 2008? Nothing.
He fills the roster spot that was created when Tank Tyler was traded to the Panthers on Monday. source...

Wilson: Galloway to work out for Kansas City
|
|
Now that wide receiver Joey Galloway is a free agent after being cut
by the New England Patriots, he might not be unemployed long.
Galloway is expected to try out for the Kansas City Chiefs today.
So, Bill Belichick's discard could become former Patriots executive Scott Pioli's new player.
The Chiefs' wide receiver position could use an influx of speed.
Galloway didn't make a good adjustment to the Patriots' scheme, but Kansas City might be a decent fit for him. continue reading...

Yahoo: Kansas City Chiefs coach threatened to trade Bowe
|
|
Kansas City Chiefs head coach Todd Haley was apparently unhappy with wide receiver Dwayne Bowe(notes) early in the team's Sunday game against the Washington Redskins. He felt free to let him have it and apparently threatened that he would trade him by today's 4 p.m. deadline if he didn't get his act together, according to ProFootballTalk. The tirade must have packed a serious punch since Bowe had his highest yardage total of the season with 109 of ‘em. In the preseason, Haley pulled another motivational trick on Bowe and demoted him to the third-string. Ouch.

SI:Panthers Land DT Tyler in Trade with Chiefs
|
|
The Carolina Panthers added depth at their weakest position Monday, sending a 2010 fifth-round draft pick to the Kansas City Chiefs for defensive tackle Tank Tyler. The
deal, coming a day before the NFL trade deadline, gives the Panthers
more options on the defensive line after the season-ending injury to Maake Kemoeatu in training camp. It's
a homecoming for the 6-foot-2, 306-pound Tyler, who grew up in
Fayetteville, N.C., and played at North Carolina State. He was taken by
the Chiefs in the third round of the 2007 draft and started all 16
games last season. But Tyler started only two of six games this season -- he was replaced by Ron Edwards -- and had 22 tackles. Tyler is expected to give Carolina options at nose tackle alongside 35-year-old Hollis Thomas, who was signed after Week 3 when he was released by St. Louis.

PFT: Trade threat turned the light on for Dwayne Bowe
|
As pointed out in the Chiefs-Redskins portion our Morning Aftermath, Kansas City receiver Dwayne Bowe caught six passes for 109 yards. It was his best output of the season. Bowe's
performance came at a time when rumors are rampant that he (and pretty
much any other Chiefs player not named "Matt Cassel") is available as
the trade deadline looms. So was he motivated by the rumors? As it turns out, no. continue reading...

Covitz: Gonzalez still has a grip on KC
|
Chiefs fans still can't let go of Tony Gonzalez.
How else do you explain the Kansas City television market ranking
No. 8 in the country for its audience watching a game between NFC teams
Chicago at Atlanta on Sunday night?
No. 88.
While viewers had their choices of watching game three of the
National League Championship Series on WTBS: "Desperate Housewives" and
"Brothers & Sisters" on ABC: "60 Minutes" and "Amazing Race" on
CBS; "Simpsons", "Family Guy" and "The Cleveland Show" on Fox; or what
I watched, "Curb Your Enthusiasm," most of Kansas City was tuned to the
NFL on NBC. continue reading...
