BR: Weak AFC West Could Equal Success For The Kansas City Chiefs
|
|
It's odd to say that a team that won just two games a year ago, has
the best chance in their division to make the playoffs, but that seems
to be the situation the new look Chiefs find themselves in.
Following the worst season in team history, Kansas City went through
a major overhaul, one that saw them replace their general manager, head
coach, starting quarterback (barring massive failure by Matt Cassel)
and their all-world tight end.
The changing of the guard could continue, with Larry Johnson still not 100 percent happy to still be sporting the Red and Gold.
How in the world with this much turnover expect to compete for
anything other than the first pick in the draft you ask? Because they
play in arguably the worst division in professional football. continue reading...

Eric Hicks re-unites with Lions' Cunningham
|
|
Gunther Cunningham must believe Eric Hicks still has something left in the tank.
Hicks, who was out of football last season after spending nine
seasons with the Chiefs and one with the New York Jets, has signed as a
free agent with the Detroit Lions, according to the Detroit News.
Cunningham, the former Chiefs defensive coordinator and head coach, is now the Lions' defensive coordinator.
Cunningham was the Chiefs' defensive coordinator when Hicks made
the club as an undrafted free agent in 1998 and head coach when Hicks
led the team with 14 sacks in 2000. continue reading...

LJ at it Again
|
Although more conservatively dressed than his last Vegas night out, Larry Johnson, in my opinion, just doesn't seem to get it. Given the fact that LJ's probation terms state he must not be in any Kansas City night club past 9 p.m. , his actions increasingly prove that his supposed change of behavior could just be that of a desperate player trying to keep a job. According to the Las Vegas Sun, LJ was with mentor Jay-Z for a fun filled weekend that included rounds (yes, rounds) of Grey Goose and pineapple juice at nightclub "Lavo" (which, apparently, would not be a violation because Lavo is not a KC Nightclub) . Maybe PFW was right, for the chiefs to fully move on, they must rid themselves of LJ.Thoughts? |

PFT: Herm To Be The Next Coors Light Former Coach
|
|
NFL rules prevent current head coaches from hawking beer. And so when a current NFL head coach becomes a former NFL head coach, he becomes a candidate for the Coors Light commercials featuring old footage augmented with smartass questions and comments about beer and other stuff not about football. The latest former NFL head coach to join the crowd? Herm Edwards of the Chiefs, according to Terry Lefton of SportsBusiness Journal. continue reading... |

Teicher: Chiefs believe Thomas can be positive influence on young players
|
|

Until the point he agreed to his new Chiefs contract, linebacker Zach Thomas wondered the same thing you’re still trying to figure out: What’s he doing in the middle of Kansas City’s rebuilding project?
Thomas, who will be 36 by the time the regular season begins, isn’t some young guy looking for a shot or even an older one in need of a final proving ground. A seven-time Pro Bowler, Thomas could have retired with a secure legacy as one of the top linebackers of his era.
His one-year stop in Dallas after 12 seasons with the Dolphins made sense for a guy of his accomplishments. Thomas, a Texas native, had done everything but play for a championship and the Cowboys had the look of a Super Bowl contender.
They wound up missing the playoffs altogether, which set Thomas to thinking as he embarked on the Kansas City portion of his career.
“Nothing is guaranteed from year to year,” he said. “You look at Dallas, where I was last year. We were guaranteed to make the Super Bowl and we didn’t even make the playoffs. So nothing is guaranteed and teams change from year to year.

FH: Chiefs Continue Rebuilding Process
|
Compared to last April, the 2009 Chiefs draft was unremarkable. A year
ago, the team landed five players who contributed immediately, and a
handful of others will get opportunities this season.
But unlike 2008, Kansas City finally has a franchise quarterback. New general manager Scott Pioli sent a second-round pick to New England for Matt Cassel (and linebacker Mike Vrabel).
Cassel, who went nine years between starts, led the Patriots to an 11-5
record last season and parlayed that into a handsome payday (eventually) and a starting gig.
While the offense was inconsistent, the defense was worse. According to Football Outsiders,
the Chiefs ranked 28th against the run and the pass, and mustered just
10 sacks all season. (The offense ranked 25th.) For some perspective,
Cowboys linebacker DeMarcus Ware had 20 sacks.
Leading up to last weekend's draft, speculation had the Chiefs taking Wake Forest linebacker Aaron Curry, then word spread that they were trying to trade out of the pick altogether, before they finally decided on LSU defensive end Tyson Jackson.
Jackson has been described as a "Richard Seymour"-type
player, but that might have more to do with Pioli's New England
connections than with Jackson's on-field abilities. Whatever, he'll
play end in defensive coordinator Clancy Pendergast's modified 3-4 scheme, and assuming Glenn Dorsey stays put, he'll move from tackle to end.

Covitz: Dolphins job does not go to Peterson
|
|

Remember all that talk about former Chiefs president Carl Peterson going to Miami as the top executive job with the Dolphins? Apparently, it was all talk. The Dolphins new owner, Stephen Ross, a friend of Peterson's from their days with the Philadelphia Stars of the USFL, announced Sunday that Michael Dee has been hired as the Dolphins' chief executive Officer of the team and Dolphin Stadium. Peterson, meanwhile, appears quite refreshed and relaxed in retirement, or shall we say his sabbatical from football after 20 years running the Chiefs. He attended Tony Gonzalez' farewell news conference last week in Kansas City after just returning from a trip to Scotland.
