Merrill: Cassel is Chiefs' next hope
|
Being a quarterback legend gets you a decent haircut, a corner booth at
the most prominent sports bar and a nickname that sticks for four
decades. In Kansas City, it makes you one in 1.9 million. "Lenny the
Cool" isn't sure how his beloved Chiefs got here, stuck somewhere
between Todd Blackledge and Brodie Croyle.
At some point, he says, they gave up drafting quarterbacks high. He's
watched one of the NFL's most intimidating venues turn half-empty,
watched a town turn cynical. During rush hour one night this past
December, when news broke that their general manager was resigning,
Kansas Citians responded by honking their horns in glee. "Something had to be done," Len Dawson says. "You'd like to see some hope here."
A warm front has pushed through the Plains, teasing people in these
parts that this long winter might finally be over. Dawson is at the
barbershop, and, for the first time in at least two years, the groans
are replaced with eager men asking, "Hey Lenny, what do you think about
the trade?" The enthusiasm is everywhere, from the watering holes in
the suburbs to the freshly painted sheds bearing arrowheads. Matt Cassel is coming.
Never mind that he was a career backup before filling in

PFT: CHIEFS NOT LIKELY TO LEAVE KANSAS CITY
|
|

Despite the fact that a Jackson County official recently sounded the alarm regarding the possibility that budgetary problems in Kansas City could put the city in breach of its lease with the Chiefs, a source with knowledge of the situation has reminded us that the Hunt family has committed $125 million to Arrowhead Stadium renovations that are due to be completed in 2010. So, while the failure of Kansas City’s proposed budget to devote $2 million to the Truman Sports Complex might technically give the Chiefs the ability to declare the existence of a breach and leave for greener pastures, the pastures would have to be a lot greener to overcome the lost investment in the future of the place where the team has played since 1972. Bottom line - the Chiefs are going nowhere. (Feel free to apply as many meanings to that as you’d like.) source... |

Baron: K.C. & T.O.? Why The Kansas City Chiefs Need Terrell Owens
|
|

So once again prolific wideout and human specimen Terrell Owens is available. Yeah I know, team cancer and perennial selfish player. But I'm here to tell you that those are simply lame excuses. The Vikings, Bills, Colts, Jags, Dolphins, Chargers, Bears and 49ers are all teams that could use wide receiver help.
The team that could really use the shot in the arm T.O. can give is the Kansas City Chiefs.
I know, remember Todd Haley and TO screaming at each other on the sideline? Texas Tech's Michael Crabtree will probably be available at the No. 3 spot so why take the risk? Haley, formerly Parcells's passing game coordinator in Dallas during Parcells's uncomfortable pairing with Owens and now the Chiefs' head coach, would take him in Kansas City.

County Budget Proposal Could Cause Chiefs to Leave Kansas City
|
Jackson County Executive Mike Sanders said he's concerned the Chiefs and Royals could leave Kansas City because of the city's budget proposal. Kansas City has an $85 million budget shortfall that has to be fixed by the end of the month.Thursday, Mayor Mark Funkhouser put forward his plan, which includes eliminating nearly $2 million the city gives each year to the Truman Sports Complex. "This came with no notice to us. We were unaware that this was even going to be an issue," Sanders said in a KMBZ radio interview. "The money would be the violation. But the fact that we would have violated a substantive provision would mean those leases are now gone … We would be on a tightrope or a high wire with no safety net." Continue reading...

Agent: Crennel not going to KC at this time
|
The agent for former Cleveland head coach Romeo Crennel said there are
no plans for him to become the defensive coordinator of the Kansas City
Chiefs. There head been reports that said Crennel was mulling
an offer from Kansa City. However, Crennel's agent, Joe Linta, said
Crennel is fully focusing on recovering from a hip replacement surgery
he had last month and that Crennel was fired by Cleveland at the end of
last season. "That is not going to happen at this time," said
Linta of Crennel joining the Chiefs. "Coach is focusing on his
rehabilitation and then he will entertain opportunities in both
football and in the media. He is looking forward to what lies ahead."
Still, Linta didn't rule out the possibility of Crennel speaking to the
Chiefs about a consulting role or coaching role down the road. Crennel
was the defensive coordinator in New England when new Kansas City
general manager Scott Pioli was there. source...

|
|

Cleveland Browns free agent cornerback Travis Daniels
is scheduled to visit the Kansas City Chiefs and the Denver Broncos
next week and is also drawing interest from the New England Patriots,
according to Albert Breer of SportingNews.com.
Daniels’ connections to Nick Saban at LSU and with the Miami
Dolphins are reportedly playing an instrumental role in his appeal to
NFL teams who have a background with Saban, the University of Alabama
coach, in addition to Daniels’ game film.
Saban has worked previously with Chiefs General Manager Scott Pioli, Broncos coach Josh McDaniels and Patriots coach Belichick. source...
