Teicher: Haley won't discuss Waters' request
|
Pro Bowl guard Brian Waters recently requested to be released from his contract but Todd Haley had little to say about that when asked today. "I’m in the business of trying to win football games," he said. "It’s very early in the game and we’ve got a long way to go. Right now, I’m just trying to find along with Scott (Pioli) football players to add to this roster. I’m still in the process of finding coaches. I don’t have a lot of time to worry about those things right now." source... |

RedZone: Cassel wants to thank Pollard
|
|

Matt Cassel also answered some questions from the Kansas City media via speakerphone. One of the first of his new teammates he will approach when the Chiefs convene for offseason workouts is safety Bernard Pollard. "I’m sure I’ll talk to him and say hello and thank him for the opportunity," Cassel said. |

TMZ: Larry Johnson -- Tackled by Own Outfit

Wearing his nonchalantly contrived top cap to the side, a Kurt Cobain
plaid button down, Mr. T necklace, blinged out pink Swatch, Abu Ghraib
business casual fatigues and a pair of Kanye West ruby red kicks,
Kansas City Chiefs' running back Larry Johnson was sidelined by the
fashion police at PURE in Vegas this weekend. full story...

Gleason: Did the Pats get fleeced?
|
The Patriots have traded Matt Cassel and Mike Vrabel to the Kansas City Chiefs for a second-round draft pick.
It's not often that I disagree with the Pats' brain trust (as the
shrine to Belichick in my house proves), but I'm forced to do so here.
The team had a gold mine: A young, game-tested quarterback in a league
that lacks available young, game-tested quarterbacks.
To win consistently in the NFL, teams need solid players at
that position, which is the conduit through which the offense flows.
Furthermore, the Pats threw in an experienced and talented linebacker
as well.
The concept that Matt Cassel is not worth a first-rounder is
questionable. The idea that the two of them aren't worth one seems
ridiculous.
At first blush, it looks as if the Pats were fleeced. While I
don't believe this trade is as bad as it might appear, I do think the
team should have received more for its players. Nonetheless, the trade
does provide insights into the thinking of the team and the league this
offseason, and there is some silver lining to this cloud.

USA Today: Winners and losers from NFL free agency opening weekend
|
They gave their team direction and a new leader by acquiring QB Matt Cassel from New England. Best of all, they gave up just the 34th pick in the draft -- a head-scratcher as news emerged that the Patriots could have had better deals, possibly including a mid-level first-rounder, from other teams. The Chiefs also brought in veteran LB Mike Vrabel. At 33, his value may be in imparting the Scott Pioli system to the young Kansas City team. source...

Mariotti: Kansas City's Sweetheart Deal for Cassel Warrants NFL Probe
|
Presumably because a pulled pork sandwich wasn't available from Arthur Bryant's barbecue joint, the New England Patriots settled for a mere second-round draft pick in a blockbuster trade with Kansas City. Sorry, but something smells here, and it's not the beans and potato salad. In fact, I'm interrupting an offseason weekend at the NFL offices to make an announcement: "Paging Roger Goodell, Roger Goodell! Bill Belichick is at it again!''
First it was Spygate, the espionage caper that left a permanent cheating smear on Belichick's legacy after the Patriots illegally videotaped opponents' defensive signals. Now we have the Pioli Scheme, a suspicion that Belichick's relationship with his close pal and dearly departed partner in dynasty glory, new Chiefs general manager Scott Pioli, contributed to a ridiculously soft compensation package in their Saturday deal. In return for the second-round choice, the Chiefs acquired a whopping, franchise-changing haul -- promising young quarterback Matt Cassel and veteran linebacker Mike Vrabel -- that should have merited at least two high picks, if not Kansas City's golden No. 3 slot in the first round of the April draft. For perspective, consider that the Houston Texans sent two second-round picks to Atlanta two years ago after signing quarterback Matt Schaub, who didn't have nearly the experience or success enjoyed by Cassel in his breakout 2008 season. And that the Chiefs obtained a first-round pick and two third-rounders last offseason when they traded Jared Allen, the Pro Bowl pass-rusher, to Minnesota. Continue reading... |

Deadspin: Jay Mariotti Calls Shenanigans On Matt Cassel Trade
|
Gentleman Jay Mariotti knows a raw deal when he sees one and something about that Matt Cassel to Kansas City trade does not smell right to him. In case you hadn't heard, the Patriots sent their "franchise" quarterback -who has fifteen non-high school starts-to the Chiefs, along with crafty veteran Mike Vrabel, and all they got in return was a single second-round pick. So wait ... that's why everyone was making such a big fuss about Cassel during the offseason? The Patriots were really going to throw out Tom Brady for a guy who wasn't worth half a second-rounder?
